VHVC Ltd Jubilee Parade Newport  Saturday 4th June 2022

Jun 8, 2022

After several meetings with the Council and jumping through the required legal hoops of, Liability Insurance, Risk Assessment, Bookings and Liaison with Christ the King College by one of our members to secure hard standing parking for the cars, the day proved to be very successful and enjoyable.

Our members cars began assembling at 1.30pm for the 3.00pm start, with drip mats as required to prevent any oil spillage onto the new car park. We were allocated slot number 4, behind the Fire Service, Ambulance and Police representatives. At 3pm sharp we moved off in line, 30 club Classic members and several interlopers who had invited themselves along. Behind us was the “Old Girl” yellow open top bus from the Ryde Museum. Only one unfortunate classic,  Mike Beston’s Hillman Minx broke down just entering the car park. Despite vain attempts to cure the fuel problem, Mike turned off at the start to get home  to ensure no breakdown, repeat while on the Parade. After a short slow run to Recreation Road, where our slot in the parade, soon had us off again and into the spectator lined street along the Mall. Many cheering people and plenty of banter with the crowd.

The crowds got more plentiful as we got near to the High Street, which was really packed through the town itself. No overheating problems encountered by any of the cars, as our front position allowed slow movement all along the route. Eventually ending in Quay Street, where echelon parking had been reserved to display the cars. Which many members of the public took full advantage of. With the weather forecast earlier in the week being so dire, it turned out sunny and dry all day. Thanks to all the members who took part in what was a very memorable and enjoyable Special event, which formed a large bulk of the Parade. By 5pm we all drifted off home to a well-earned rest.
